Cool Cat Readers
How do I become a Cool Cat Reader?
Every child at Freeport Elementary wants to be a “Cool Cat Reader”! Below are the steps to reaching this goal.
Each child will be given a Reading test that will determine a level at which they can read independently. This is what your child might refer to as their “zone” and it helps each child choose books from the media center that are “just right” for them.
· In order to become a “Cool Cat Reader” they must read books in their zone and pass tests (with 80% accuracy) to earn points. The number of points required to become a “Cool Cat Reader” is determined by the grade level. The tests will be taken at school, but the books can be read at home!
Kindergarten - 10 points
1st grade - 30 points
2nd grade - 50 points
3rd grade - 60 points
4th grade - 70 points
· Parents, this is where YOU can help out! This is going to look like a LOT of points to your child. Without encouragement, they could be overwhelmed and decide not to try. But they have all year and their teacher will also be helping them to set weekly or monthly goals. If you read consistently with your child (15 minutes a day, for example) this goal is very attainable.
When your child reaches the required number of points to be a “Cool Cat Reader,” he/she will receive a Cool Cat Reader T-shirt (sponsored by PTO) and will be recognized on the Morning Show. Students who reach their Cool Cat Reading goal (most points, average of 80% or higher) will go on a field trip at the end of the year.
This year, we will be focusing on classroom participation. Classes will be recognized on the bulletin board in Hallway 3B AND will receive quarterly rewards and recognition on the Wildcat Morning Show for having the Most Cool Cat Readers.
Students can continue to earn points until May 3rd.. The students with the most AR points at each grade level (gr. K-4) will receive recognition and an award at the end of the year Awards Assembly.
Additional levels after Cool Cat Reader goal has been met::
A special AR parent letter will be sent home..
If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Lathinghouse in the Media Center or your child’s teacher.
